CHERIoT (Capability Hardware Extension to RISC-V for IoT) is a hardware-software platform that brings capability-based memory protection to small embedded devices. It enforces memory safety at the hardware level, catching entire classes of vulnerabilities like buffer overflows and use-after-free automatically. For a library like wolfSSL that handles sensitive key material and processes untrusted network data, this is a natural fit.
With the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) requiring secure-by-design principles and manufacturers to address known vulnerability classes, hardware-enforced memory safety is becoming more than just a nice-to-have. Running wolfSSL on CHERIoT gives product developers a way to tackle one of the most common sources of security vulnerabilities at the hardware level.
