FIPS 140-3 support is coming to pfSense! pfSense is one of the most widely deployed open-source firewall and router platforms in the world, powering everything from small office networks to large enterprise and government deployments. Built on FreeBSD, pfSense has earned a reputation for stability, flexibility, and a rich feature set spanning VPN, IDS/IPS, captive portals, and advanced routing. We’re excited to announce that we’re planning to bring wolfCrypt FIPS 140-3 validated cryptography to pfSense.
Similar to other networking platforms we’ve integrated with, pfSense relies heavily on cryptography for IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, and certificate handling. By integrating wolfCrypt, the world’s first SP800-140Br1 FIPS 140-3 validated module (Certificate #4718), pfSense users will gain access to government-grade, standards-compliant cryptography without sacrificing the performance and flexibility they expect. This opens the door for pfSense to be deployed in federal, defense, healthcare, and other regulated environments that require FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modules.
The integration will also position pfSense users to take advantage of wolfSSL’s post-quantum cryptography support, including ML-KEM and ML-DSA, keeping deployments ready for the quantum era.
