Live Webinar – Porting wolfIP: From Network Drivers to RTOS Integration

Dynamic memory can make embedded networking unpredictable. Heap fragmentation can cause allocation failures, while non-deterministic allocation times can interfere with real-time deadlines. Memory corruption and undefined behavior make these failures even harder to reproduce and diagnose.

Join us on September 30 at 8 AM PT for this dynamic and informative webinar.

wolfIP addresses these challenges with a deterministic network-stack architecture built around static memory and resources defined before runtime. This webinar will explain the engineering decisions behind that architecture and show how packets move through the wolfIP_poll() cycle without dynamic allocation.

The webinar will then move from architecture to implementation, showing how to port wolfIP to new network hardware and operating systems while preserving predictable behavior. The first part of the port connects the stack to the network controller, where engineers must account for packet movement, buffer ownership, DMA operation, cache behavior, and PHY initialization. The second part connects wolfIP to the operating system, adding the tasks, synchronization, and socket behavior applications expect.

Using simple driver examples and a Zephyr port case study, the session will connect these individual requirements into a practical porting workflow. It will also identify common problems that can cause dropped packets, missed task wakeups, inconsistent locking, or unreliable initialization.

This webinar will cover:

  • Follow packet processing through the wolfIP_poll() cycle
  • Understand the link-layer interface and the driver’s poll and send responsibilities
  • Connect wolfIP to simple and DMA-based network drivers
  • Manage DMA rings, buffer ownership, memory ordering, and cache coherency
  • Bring up the PHY and connect the completed driver to the stack
  • Build RTOS tasks, locking, and blocking socket operations
  • Turn network callbacks into reliable task wakeups
  • Apply porting rules and avoid common pitfalls
